Education Secretary Betsy DeVos made it clear today that she is fully aware her aim to reverse protections for trans youth is putting them in harm's way.

Devos appeared before the House Education and Labor Committee testifying about her reasons for wanting to remove anti-discrimination policies put in place by former President Obama to protect LGBT students and others.

During her time in front of the committee, DeVos tried her best to sidestep direct questions from Civil Rights Subcommittee Chairwoman Suzanne Bonamici (D) of Oregon.

Bonamici asked, “When you rolled back [the trans-inclusive] guidance did you know that the stress of harassment and discrimination can lead to lower attendance and grades as well as depression and anxiety for transgender students? Did you know that?”

DeVos started one of her boilerplate responses about being inclusive of all students but was interrupted by an insistent Bonamici.

“I would really like an answer,” she said. “Students and families need to know this. We had a mother of a transgender student here yesterday. We need to know this. Did you know when you rolled back the guidance that the stress of harassment and discrimination can lead to lower attendance and grades as well as depression for transgender students? Did you know that when you rolled back the guidance?”

“I do know that,” replied DeVos.

Heres video of that exchange.
