"In many ways, Buttigieg is [Trump's] polar opposite: younger, dorkier, shorter, calmer and married to a man [Chasten Buttigieg]."
Time Magazine has made history by featuring the first openly gay Democratic American presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg and his husband, Chasten, as "First Family" on this week's cover.
The image appeared on the publication's Instagram page Thursday with the following caption, saying:
"In a field of more than 20 candidates—including six Senators, four Congressmen, two governors and a former Vice President—@pete.buttigieg (pronounced Boot-edge-edge) has vaulted from near total obscurity toward the front of the Democratic pack, running ahead of or even with more established candidates and behind only @joebiden and @berniesanders."
The 37-year-old mayor has shaken up the race for the 2020 presidential election. He has become a popular candidate for the Democratic party, but still has a lot to do in this era of millennials at the polls. His platform is “Freedom, Security and Democracy,” but even with such a bold and aggressive slogan, he still has a lot of work to do.
"In many ways, Buttigieg is @realdonaldtrump’s polar opposite: younger, dorkier, shorter, calmer and married to a man (@chasten.buttigieg)," Time explains on social media. "His success may depend on whether Democrats want a fighter to match #Trump, or whether Americans want to “change the channel,” as Buttigieg puts it. 'People already have a leader who screams and yells,' he says. 'How do you think that’s working out for us?'”
His husband Chastan has also become a popular personality. Social media has embraced the young Mr. Buttigieg and his quick takes on being the husband of a presidential hopeful.
In tweet that ends with a photo of the Time cover, Chastan said, "11 years ago, when I came out, I didn’t think there was a place for me in this world. 10 months ago we said 'I do.' 1 month ago we said 'let’s do this. Today: [TIME PHOTO]'"
