Felton Spencer played 11 seasons of professional basketball in the National Basketball Association (NBA) in the United States. He was born in Louisville on January 15, 1968, but he spent the majority of his youth in a town that was close by.

The combination of Spencer’s height and his abilities as a center helped him become a well-known athlete. In college, he was a standout for Louisville, and when he entered the NBA draught in 1990, the Minnesota Timberwolves selected him as the first overall choice.

During his time in the National Basketball Association (NBA), Spencer played for the Utah Jazz, the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Orlando Magic, and the Golden State Warriors.

Felton Spencer broke both the single-season and lifetime records for field goal percentage while he was attending the University of Louisville. After that, he went on to play in the NBA for a total of 12 seasons. He was 55.

In a tweet, the city of Louisville expressed its ‘heartbreak’ over the passing of Spencer. Kenny Payne, who coached Spencer while he was a member of the Cardinals and was also a former teammate of Spencer’s, turned to social media to express his sympathies to Spencer’s family.

The 7-foot tall native of Louisville who went by the nickname “Chief” currently shares sixth place on the all-time scoring list at the university with his total of 1,168 points earned between 1986 and 1990. On February 27, 1990, he played for LSU against Tulane and scored 32 points.

Spencer played in the NBA for a total of 12 seasons, spending time with the Timberwolves, Jazz, Magic, Warriors, Spurs, and Knicks. During the course of those seasons, he posted averages of 5.2 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.

Spencer was a standout at the University of Louisville, where he played in 134 games between the years 1986 and 1990.

The Cardinals, with the help of their 7-foot-3 big man, have won three consecutive Metro Conference tournaments and have made it to the Sweet 16 on two separate occasions.

His career field goal percentage at Louisville currently stands at 62.8%, setting a new record in the process.

Spencer began his professional career with the Timberwolves, the team that had selected him sixth overall in the NBA draught in 1990. He remained with the Timberwolves for the first three years of his career.

After spending his first two professional seasons with the Knicks, Spencer retired from the NBA in 2002 and began his coaching career as an assistant player either at Spalding University or Bellarmine University.

After being selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 1990 NBA Draft, Felton quickly established himself as a fan favorite and remains so to this day. After averaging 7.1 points and 7.9 rebounds per game throughout his rookie season in the NBA in 1991, he was selected to the 1991 NBA All-Rookie Second Team.

In the later stages of his career in the NBA, Felton played for the Utah Jazz, the Orlando Magic, the Golden State Warriors, the San Antonio Spurs, and the New York Knicks. The Los Angeles Lakers were another team he played for.

After playing in 604 NBA games throughout the course of his career, Felton announced his retirement in 2002 after compiling lifetime averages of 5.2 points and 5.4 rebounds. After that, he became involved in coaching by serving as an assistant at both Spalding and Bellarmine.
