The Federal Security Agency has leveled allegations against Gershkovich that he gathered information on a military factory that is protected as a state secret. It has not been mentioned what the factory’s name is or where it is located.
The Russian government has asserted that the American journalist was held in Yekaterinburg on suspicion that he was attempting to acquire confidential information. In spite of the Kremlin’s assertions that he was “caught red-handed,” the evidence of his guilt has not been presented.
“It has been proven beyond a reasonable doubt that E. “Gershkovich was acting on an assignment from the US side and was gathering information regarding the activity of one of the firms of Russia’s military-industrial complex that was classified as a state secret,” the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) said.
In his most recent report from Moscow, which was released earlier this week, Gershkovich focused on the economic slowdown that Russia is experiencing as a result of Western sanctions that were imposed when forces invaded Ukraine in the previous year.
Throughout the course of the past few months, he has focused mainly on reporting on Russian politics and the crisis in Ukraine. Yaroslav Shirshikov, a political analyst in Yekaterinburg, stated that Gershkovich had just interviewed him regarding the local opinions toward the Wagner mercenary force, which is currently fighting in Ukraine.
Shirshikov stated that he had talked to the reporter once before and that another appointment to do so was set for this coming Thursday. During the course of the court proceedings, Gershkovich vehemently refuted the allegations of espionage made by the Federal Security Service (FSB).

Detention pending trial is scheduled to continue for Evan Gershkovich until the 29th of May. If he is found guilty, the maximum possible term for him is twenty years in prison. The claims brought forward by the FSB were refuted by the Wall Street Journal, which also called for Gershkovich’s immediate release. They sent him and his family messages of support and solidarity.
