After the death of Barbara Cooper in October 2022, he ran for the Democratic primary for a special election to succeed her. He won with a shining 52.35% of the vote since no one including both Republicans and independents filed for the seat. He was unanimously appointed and was appointed the next day as an interim representative by the Memphis City Council.
At the age of 28, he became the second youngest lawmaker serving in the Tennessee House of Representatives. He was sworn into the house in February 2023.
Recently, he was expelled from his post after he was accused of joining the protest for gun control reform held in the state capitol. The reform was organized with reference to the 2023 Covenant School shooting which took the lives of six including small kids and adults.
