SAN DIEGO – The second annual Big Switch fundraiser for The Center produced $2,500, organizers say.
On Tuesday, March 23, hundreds of community members, activists and diners came out to support the Big Switch, an event where employees from the Urban Mo’s and Baja Betty’s restaurants “switched teams” for the night, all in the name of charity.
A percentage of that night’s proceeds had been designated to benefit The San Diego LGBT Community Center.
“The first Big Switch was incepted in early 2009 when we learned that grant funding previously designated to support the Sunburst Housing project had taken a hit,” Urban Mo’s general manager Matt Ramon said.
“In an already tight economy, every charitable dollar counts, and we wanted to come up with a fun way for the entire community to get involved. After noting the marked success of the first Big Switch, we decided we wanted to make it an annual event. The Center does so much for so many, touching tens of thousands of lives every year, and we realized we shouldn't just support community organizations during times of crisis, we should support them whenever we can- because it's the right thing to do."
