VIDEO: South Bay Pride to celebrate LGBT community in Chula Vista on Saturday

CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- There is no shortage of LGBT Pride in San Diego County.

Along with the San Diego LGBT Pride parade and festival, which is known as the fifth-largest pride celebration in the nation, three other smaller but similar events occur each year in the region.

To celebrate pride in the southern portion of San Diego County, the South Bay Pride Art & Music Festival will be held Saturday, Aug. 20, from noon to 7 pm at Chula Vista's Memorial Park.

The event will include many of the things that people have to come to expect at LGBT pride celebrations such as entertainment, food, a beer garden and community information booths.

The event, now in its ninth year, began as Gay Day in South Bay, said one of the event's founders Marci Bair in an interview with San Diego Gay & Lesbian News last year. Organizers wanted to create a family-style picnic, primarily for LGBT families and their friends in Chula Vista.

Bair, who was the executive director of Family Matters back then, said she wanted to reach out to the families who lived in the area.

"I lived in Chula Vista and knew that we were not the only LGBT family in the South Bay," recalled Bair, who said that 50 or so people attend the first event.

The South Bay Alliance was formed in 2006 and took over management of the growing event, with Bair still maintaining an active role in its production, even today.

Those who attend South Bay Pride will get to see a diverse entertainment lineup, hosted by Laura Jane:
