Gavin Newsom to headline Bob Filner rally Wednesday at Rich’s

SAN DIEGO – Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, who is wildly popular in California’s LGBT community for his trailblazing stance in support of marriage equality and other gay-rights issues, will be firing up the Democratic faithful at a Bob Filner for Mayor rally this week.

The event will begin at 4:30 pm Wednesday, May 23, at Rich’s, 1051 University Ave. in Hillcrest. Admission is $20 at the door.

A VIP photo opportunity with Newsom and Filner, starting at 5:40 pm, costs $250 per person.

Former San Diego City Councilmember Donna Frye will also speak at the rally.

Filner is the only Democrat in the June 5 mayoral primary in San Diego. Both Republican candidates, Carl DeMaio and Bonnie Dumanis, are openly gay. The Independent, Nathan Fletcher, left the Republican Party after the country branch endorsed DeMaio.

Newsom, the former mayor of San Francisco, gained national publicity in 2004 when as mayor directed the issuances of marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples in conflict with laws at that time. By pioneering the way on marriage equality, Newsom won legions of fans for his gay-friendly policies. He also fought passage of California’s Proposition 8, and remains a national spokesperson for same-sex marriage and gay rights.

Although he announced a run for governor in 2009, Newsom bowed out of the race when it became apparent that former governor Jerry Brown had a wide lead. Political observers believe that Newsom will either run for governor after Brown leaves office or has his eyes on the U.S. Senate should Dianne Feinstein or Barbara Boxer decide to retire.
