PRIDE group at USD to celebrate 21 years at Saturday event

SAN DIEGO -- PRIDE - The University of San Diego's (USD) LGBT student group - will celebrate its 21st anniversary with a special fundraiser celebration on Saturday, Nov. 10.

Students, faculty, alumni, friends and supporters of USD's LGBT community are welcome to attend the event, which is being sponsored by alumni of USD's PRIDE group.

Founded in 1991, the group has a long history of bringing LGBT issues to the forefront of the private Catholic university.

The group was instrumental in a number of campus milestones, including the introduction of the school's first LGBTQ-themed course "Gay and Lesbian Voices," adding "sexual orientation" to the school's non-discrimination policy, and establishing the Rainbow Educators and Safe Space Allies program.

It hasn't always been easy for PRIDE to operate at USD, with some campus stakeholders claiming that the group's mission is contrary to Catholic teachings.

Earlier this year, prominent local attorney Charles LiMandri, a big supporter of Proposition 8 and whose son is a freshmen at the university, launched a website, " Alumni for a Catholic USD," in response to PRIDE's first-ever drag show held on campus.

Citing a California state law passed in October 2011, AB 887 and USD's addition of "gender identity" and "gender expression" to its Equal Opportunity Policy and Policy Prohibiting Discrimination and Harassment, USD president Mary Lyons approved the event, receiving numerous letters of support from community members commending her decision.

City Councilmember Todd Gloria, who is a 2000 USD alumnus, will be the honorary guest at Saturday's celebration. Event organizers will honor Gloria for his contributions to USD and the San Diego LGBT community.

Peter Fajkowski, who founded PRIDE and graduated in 1992, will also be attending the event and be awarded with the Spirit of Pride award.

The event will feature light appetizers, beer, wine and non-alcoholic drinks, celebration and a brief presentation.

Tickets are $50 per person, and all guests must be 21 or older.

The event will be held in the Degheri Alumni Center Courtyard on the USD campus from 6-9 pm.
