North County Pride selects new director

OCEANSIDE, Calif. -- The North County LGBTQ Resource Center has selected community activist John Jones as the new director of its annual North County Pride celebration.

Jones, who will replace former director Tina Leight-Rhodes, will begin this new volunteer role immediately.

North County Pride @ the Beach is an annual celebration that brings together residents of San Diego's northern communities, who often feel disconnected from the LGBT community in the central parts of the region. Some North County residents have to commute over 45-minutes in normal traffic conditions to get to Hillcrest, known as the hub of San Diego's county LGBT community.

The North County LGBTQ Resource Center, and its North County Pride celebration serve to bridge this distance gap and connect the northern areas with the LGBT community.

The annual celebration has grown over the years, with a number of community organizations, entertainment, food, drink, and other attractions at beach-side venue.

The 23-year-old Jones became active in the LGBT community while attending Palomar College in San Marcos, joining the school's LGBTQA Club.

According to a statement released by the North County LGBTQ Resource Center, Jones created a safer place for students of all sexual orientations at Palomar College by planning events, hosting forums, and getting other students involved in LGBTQ issues.

Jones currently attends Cal State San Marcos (CSUSM), working on a bachelor of science in psychology with a minor in women's studies. At CSUSM, Jones is currently serving as president of the campus LGBTQA club.

This year's North County Pride celebration will take place Oct. 12.
