SAN DIEGO -- Mankind, a popular boutique in Hillcrest catering to the gay community, is open and preparing for some big changes in the upcoming weeks.
Brian Casey, owner and president of Mankind, wanted to make sure customers knew that the store was still open to serve them and shared his excitement about what is to come, including a move to a new location closer to Hillcrest’s core.
The store will be moving in April to 1295 University Ave., next to the popular Filter Coffeehouse. This new location will provide greater foot traffic to the store, and add another option for people who like to walk and visit the various businesses along this busy corridor.
“Can you think of a better location for a gay store? We can’t wait for the move," Casey said.
Currently situated at the border of Hillcrest and Banker’s Hill on Fifth Avenue, the store’s present location is somewhat “off the beaten path.” Considered “an upscale gay friendly mega store,” the store sells fashionable apparel, underwear, gift items, and a full array of adult videos and products.
Once in the new location, Casey says the store will focus on its apparel lines while continuing to provide high quality adult, video and gift products.
“We like to think of the store as a fun place to shop and ‘your one stop gay shop,’” Casey said. And once the new location opens in April, it will be even more convenient to reach and customers will be able to enjoy the updated storefront - including some surprises!
“There will also be a couple of surprises in the fitting rooms. Our designers have come up with something really cool, that will be a first in the whole country,” Casey said.
What is this surprise in the fitting rooms? Casey wouldn't even give us a hint, but said we’ll all be in for a great surprise once the grand opening comes around.
“Trust me, people are going to be talking about this,” Casey said.
Casey is also looking forward to the new location’s proximity to the numerous special events that happen along University Avenue, many right in front of the store, including the San Diego Pride Parade, Nightmare on Normal Street, Hillcrest Hoe Down, Hillcrest Fat Tuedsay and more.
“We will be doing lots of special promotions that customers can look forward to during these major community events,” Casey said.
The original location is still open at 3425 Fifth Ave. and customers are encouraged to stop by and check out the great sales and specials that are currently going on in preparation for the move. Those who like Mankind’s Facebook page will be the first to find out about these promotions through posts there.
Casey also was happy to announce that his entire staff, including store manager Steve Bernier, will be moving to the new location.
“I’m so lucky that Steve has agreed to stay on,” Casey said. “I’m learning a lot from him!”
Mankind’s next event will be a fashion show at Gossip Grill on Thursday, March 27 at 9 pm featuring styles from Timoteo. The show will include giveaways, a $5 call drink menu and music provided by a DJ.
