SAN DIEGO -- El Cajon Boulevard, one of San Diego's most storied streets, will celebrate the 25th anniversary of its gateway "The Boulevard" sign with a series of festivities starting on Friday, April 4.
Once known for its late night drive-in restaurants, drag races, and vibrant business district, one of the most visual elements of El Cajon Boulevard of the past was its mid-century style neon signs. As times changed and parts of El Cajon Boulevard went into decline, the El Cajon Boulevard Business Improvement Association erected in 1989 a large neon sign at the foot of the street that reads "The Boulevard."
The sign was installed just one year after the establishment of the business association, which says the purpose of the installation was to "return the glory of big, bright lights." At the time, city officials and local business leaders saw the sign as a major new landmark which would stimulate business along the Boulevard and encourage further community revitalization efforts.
Twenty-five years later, that vision continues to become a reality, as new businesses are opening up along the street, with many saying El Cajon Boulevard is once again "flourishing."
The celebration will begin at 7 pm on Friday, April 4 at The Lafayette Hotel’s Mississippi Ballroom, located at 2223 El Cajon Blvd., and include an evening of food, drink, local merchants and special musical guests.
The evening will also feature live acts offered up by some of San Diego’s most influential contributors to the music scene whose photographs will line El Cajon Boulevard. The Amandas will kick-off the night will some soul-stomping numbers, followed by Living Legends Award winner Daniel Jackson, Robin Henkel, Bart Mendoza, Gregory Page and a duet by Miss Erika Davies and Stephan Ray. The event will conclude with the one and only Robert Lopez, aka El Vez, and his electrifying band, The Little Richards.
Tickets are $10-$15, and are available HERE.
To further celebrate, a series of street banners are being installed along the Boulevard that showcase its different elements: Cruise the Boulevard, Dine on the Boulevard, Rock the Boulevard, and Shop the Boulevard. A collection of 190 banners will be hung along El Cajon Boulevard between Park Boulevard and 54th Street.
The banners will be unveiled during the celebration on April 4.
