SAN DIEGO, California -- The Hillcrest community now has 158 new parking spots for visitors to utilize on most evenings and weekends, thanks to the Uptown Parking District which has leased the spaces in the DMV lot on Normal Street.
To celebrate - more parking is considered a big deal on the congested streets of the neighborhood - community members are invited to a ribbon-cutting celebration on Friday, June 6 at 6:30 pm in the DMV lot. At that time, the Parking District will also reveal a new look for the ParkHillcrest Trolley.
Local photographer John Thurston created the concept that will be seen on the trolley, which runs throughout the neighborhood Friday-Sunday.
"We wanted to show the diversity of the people of Hillcrest and encourage everyone to get on the trolley,” Thurston said. The images are intended to capture the heart of Hillcrest and its diversity. There’s a chef, a mother of two and her toddler, a hipster, a cowgirl, a wheelchair user and Glitz Glam, a popular drag performance artist.
"There’s a story behind every person featured on the trolley, from the hipster who launched SoNoTrading.com at the Hillcrest Farmers Market, to Lily, the disabled child who uses a wheelchair and her amazing family, to the glamorous Glitz Glam, who was married to his partner live on the Grammy’s earlier this year."
As for parking, the DMV lot, along with the 44 new spaces recently added by realigning portions of the streets in Hillcrest, has yielded 202 new car spaces.
“Now it is easier than ever to find parking in Hillcrest. Drivers can simply park for free at the DMV lot and get on the free ParkHillcrest Trolley to be shuttled within steps of the business they want to visit,” said Elizabeth Hannon, COO of the Uptown Community Parking District.
The DMV lot on Normal Street is open for free public parking Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings from 6:30 pm to 3 am (closed Tuesdays and Thursdays) and Saturday, Sunday and state holidays from 7 am to 3 am.
