Sunday night was filled with big hair, big surprises and some of the biggest members and allies of the LGBT community for the 43rd annual Nicky Awards which took place at The Marriott Courtyard at Liberty Station.

The cool December evening was alive with excitement and anticipation as some of San Diego's most well-known community members filed into the double-doors at the Marriot in Point Loma. People took their places on the step-and-repeat for a photo op before heading into the lobby to mingle, sip wine and bid on items in the silent auction.

The Mayor of Hillcrest and founder of the Nicky's, Nicole Murray Ramirez was as busy as his bright blue and white blazer, making the social rounds while getting everything in place to start the big show.

Special guests included Mayor Kevin Faulconer and First Lady Katherine, on hand to present the Mayor George Moscone Humanitarian Award directly to special guests Judy and Dennis Shepard for their work in fundraising and LGBT social causes.

The Harvey Milk Award was presented to the San Diego History Museum, 18-year-old trans activist Sam Moehlig, and the documentary film The San Diego Gay Bar History.

Then it was all in the hands of the emcee "Miss Pearl," who entertained the crowd while presenting the golden statuettes. The audience was then treated to a special performance by Paris Sukomi Max channeling Elphaba from Wicked before the final awards were given out and the evening came to a close.

This very publication won Best Online Publication for the eighth year in a row.

Organizers were dedicated to keeping the show under two hours and that's exactly what they did. Overall, thorough cheers, tears, and applause, it was another successful night at the Nicky Awards.
