SDGLN Weekly Wrap: Feb. 16 - Feb 22, 2019

This was a short week as people took Monday off in observance of President's Day, but there was plenty in the news both locally and nationally including yet another twist in the Jussie Smollett case.

In Hillcrest, the Asian Bistro reopened and the community came out to show their support and an emergency Town Hall meeting also brought people together to discuss the recent rash of crimes that have impacted Hillcrest. One of them being the defacement of the Hillcrest Pride flag plaques.

Hale Media and Crest Cafe joined forces to raise money to pay for repairs of the flag and you can still donate by clicking HERE.

NEWS

This summer you will be able to select something other than "male" or "female" on your airline ticket information as major airlines update their booking requirements.

The Hillcrest restaurant where Stefano Markell Parker opened fire last week reopened Tuesday night, one week after the attack. The Asian Bistro on University Avenue suffered extensive damage to its facade especially to the windows, some of which shattered due to the hail of bullets from the gunman's rifle.

Jussie Smollett has turned himself in to police and is now considered a suspect in the alleged hate crime he reported late last month. Chicago police called the alleged attack a "hoax."

CAUSES

San Diego and Hillcrest community, welcomed Patty Thongchua, owner of The Asian Bistro to a special Town Hall meeting to discuss the recent uptick in crimes to the Hillcrest area.

The International Imperial Courts of the U.S.A, Canada, and Mexico, and the National LGBTQ Task Force are currently accepting nominations for a joint project -- the establishment of a National LGBTQ Wall of Honor to be located inside the historic Stonewall Inn in New York City.

A recent video circulating around the internet shows a dangerous clip from "The Real Dumbass World," a show that is currently airing on the internet streaming video network, Zeus. Trans advocates weigh in on why they think this show is problematic.

With Rami Maleck getting accolades for portraying Freddie Mercury in the biopic "Bohemian Rhapsody" last year, Taron Egerton may well be on his way to Oscar gold himself in 2020 with his portrayal of Elton John in "Rocketman."

If you're still reeling from the double-twist on Ru Paul's Drag Race All Stars finale which ended last week, get ready for whole new surprises as season 11 of Drag Race proper begins on Thursday, Feb. 28. Here is a list of guest judges that will appear this season.

Joey Amato visits LGBT Milwaukee: "I am always up for a big adventure, so I thought visiting Milwaukee right before winter would be a good idea. Little did I know, winter comes early in Wisconsin. I was greeted with a small snow storm and below freezing temperatures, but I wasn’t going to let that stop me. It was my first time visiting the city and I had lots to see."

Jean Lowerison reviews the fascinating yet disturbing "Of Fathers and Sons."
