It was a big news week both locally and globally. First, one of three naval vessels honoring historic civil rights leaders began construction in San Diego with the USNS John Lewis. The next ship on the assembly line will the USNS Harvey Milk.

On Friday Taiwan became the first Asian state to legalize same-sex marriage. 

And on the fun-side, summer comes a little early with the Glow Pool Party.

NEWS

Taiwan has made history today as it became the first place in Asia for same-sex couples to legally marry. Lawmakers on the self-ruled island state approved a bill following two years of preparation to amend existing marriage laws which were deemed unconstitutional in 2017. 

Despite reports that the Trump administration was against The Equality Act, a bill which proposes to add federal LGBT anti-discrimination protections across all 50 states, it passed in the U.S. House of Representatives Friday morning. It will now head to the U.S. Senate. 

In 2016, the then Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus officially announced that three naval vessels would be named after prominent U.S. civil rights leaders which include Congressman John Lewis, gay rights activist and politician Harvey Milk, and U.S. Senator Robert Kennedy. This week the first of those ships began construction in San Diego. 

Although no official word has come out of the White House about its position on the Equality Act scheduled for a U.S. House vote on Friday, one unnamed administration official says President Trump is not supporting it

It didn't take long before some conservatives and "family" watchdog groups began their charge against PBS and the kid's show "Arthur"  after the show revealed that one of their main characters is gay. Furthermore, that reveal was made at a gay wedding and the groom is a popular teacher who works at the titular character's elementary school. 

The governing body of California Polytechnic State University’s faculty has voted to remove a Chick-fil-A from their campus last Tuesday according to LGBTQ Nation.  

COMMENTARY

On Wednesday Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer won City Council approval of a new emergency ordinance that will protect the quality of life in neighborhoods and address the proliferation of people living in unsafe conditions in vehicles.

CAUSES

Fernando Zweifach López remembers Harvey Milk while calling for intersectional civic engagement: "May 22 is Harvey Milk’s birthday! Not everyone knows that Harvey Milk lived in San Diego before moving to San Francisco. He was stationed here while serving in the U.S. Navy and credited the experience with his love for California and his eventual move to San Francisco." 

ENTERTAINMENT

Get ready for conservative organizations such as One Million Moms et al., to have a collective meltdown with a boycott most likely to follow as PBS has revealed in one of its most popular kid's shows that a main character is gay--a teacher no less!

Iconic celebrity, gay ally and animal welfare activist Doris Day has died. She was 97-years-old. The Doris Day Foundation confirmed the news early Monday morning. They said she died at her Carmel Valley home.

E-feuds seem to be the latest in celebrity scandals for the modern age and this weekend two of the biggest in that sector made Google search headlines, the effect of which resulted in millions of followers hitting unsubscribe to James Charles.

Millennials probably have the biggest selection of LGBT themed stories in modern cinema. But go back about four decades and if there was a gay person in a movie they were either a tragic pawn or a serial killer. A new fake ad pays homage to one of the biggest of them all, "Cruising." 

Pop princess and dance floor icon Britney Spears may never perform again according to her longtime manager Larry Rudolph. In a breaking story from TMZ, Rudolph said it's his opinion that Spears won't return to the Vegas stage or possibly any others.
