SDGLN Weekly Wrap: June 22 – June 28, 2019

This week there was a variety of coverage in San Diego Gay and Lesbian News. First, police were called into Hillcrest after someone found a dead body on Sunday morning. This week we also celebrated half a century since the LGBT community rose up against authority at the Stonewall Inn in New York, beginning the gay liberation movement.

Also, we got some great news that Babycakes will be making a comeback to Hillcrest this summer on July 8, as a popup shop inside Fiji Yogurt.

On the social front, this Saturday Rich’s Nightclub will go crazy as SDPIX presents Bitch U Ready? This Sh*t Is Bananas!

These stories and so much more in this week’s edition of The Weekly Wrap.

San Diego Police are investigating an apparent homicide in Hillcrest after they recovered a body in the 3400 block of Albert Street. It happened at approximately 5:30 am on Sunday when an unnamed person made a call to the police department to report the body.

The most famous tailgate of 2019 made an appearance at Oklahoma City Pride this past weekend. Cody Barlow the owner of a 1991 Chevrolet Silverado made a bold statement earlier this month when he duct taped the colors of Pride to the back of his tailgate with the words “NOT ALL COUNTRY BOYS ARE BIGOTS” and posted the image on social media.

A Florida library had to cancel an event which was open to LGBT youth after an angry protestor and self-titled “Activist Mommy,” Elizabeth Johnston, spearheaded what turned out to be an effective phone campaign.

A lesbian couple attending an “Out at the Fair” concert event in Alameda County, California, say they were “kicked out” by security for dancing together. The Alameda County Fair had its inaugural LGBT day with musical duo Aly & AJ performing as special guests on Saturday.

In an open petition published by Medium today, LGBT employees from the biggest search engine in the world ask that SF Pride not include the company in their Pride festival this weekend.

Just in time for summer, Babycakes is returning to Hillcrest. The bakery is not taking up a permanent spot just yet, it’s partnering up with Fiji Yogurt and opening up a popup shop on University Avenue on July 8.

Reverend Irene Monroe recalls her time at Stonewall during the riots: “The theme this Pride month is “Looking back, Loving forward. This week leads up to the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots that took place from June 27 to 29, 1969, in the Greenwich Village section of NYC. The event is well-known because it galvanized LGBTQ+ activist organizations and movements here and abroad.”

The Executive Director of San Diego Pride says The Spirit of Stonewall, as is true for many others, hold a special place in his heart.

“American Crime” star Connor Jessup came out as gay on social media Monday. The 25-year-old actor, writer, and director posted a heartfelt message to his followers saying he knew he was gay since he was 13 but hid it for years.

In celebration of 50 years of Pride, LEGOLAND Discovery Center in Westchester, New York may have reduced the scale of the annual event but not the size of its message. The amusement park is celebrating Pride month brick by brick, literally, in its Miniland attraction with its pint-sized recreation of the famous parade.

Ryan Murphy’s announced yet another project in his ever-expanding development list, this time for his much talked about five-year contract with Netflix.

In what is arguably Netflix’s crown jewel, Orange is the New Black is taking its final bow this year with its seventh and final season. This year the ladies of Litchfield come to terms with the fact that prison has changed them forever.

On the heels of the tenth anniversary of original Charlie’s Angels star Farrah Fawcett’s passing, its reboot dropped another trailer on Thursday. The movie based on the 70’s television show about an elite trio of sexy female private investigators has never lost its cult following and spawned a previous movie adaptation in 2000 and an attempt at another television series in 2011.

Our film critic reviews the AIDS crisis era documentary “5B,” about those people who helped patients when no one else would.
