This week there was a lot of activity in Hillcrest, especially on Tuesday when the Hillcrest Business Association elected their new board members amid a party that celebrates the new Normal Street Promenade project. In addition to all the fun, wayfinding kiosks were unveiled which point visitors to different landmarks in the historic district.
Also, San Diego Gay and Lesbian News profiled Marcia Villavicencio, a first-generation Latina who is rising up through the ranks in the Navy. Her story is inspirational especially this week when we celebrate National Coming Out Day.

Kwame Anthony Appiah, Ph.D.: Born in London, England, Appiah grew up in Ghana. His father, a native Ghanaian, was a well-known lawyer and politician. His mother, the daughter of a British statesmen, was an author and scholar. Their widely publicized marriage was one of the first interracial “society weddings” in Britain. It is thought to have inspired the 1967 film, “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.”
Dr. Ethel Allen: Dr. Allen was an osteopath and a groundbreaking Republican politician. She became the first African-American woman on the Philadelphia City Council.
