Hillcrest is about to get spooky fun this week as the neighborhood goes into full-on Halloween mode. Of course, there is the ever-popular Nightmare on Normal Street in which Hillcrest comes alive for its annual block party. This year entertainment features some great talent from the reality series Dragula and costume contests for humans and their fur babies. All the details are below.

As far as news, on the national front, a Texas teacher might be fired for coming out he says, but the school board denies that accusation citing another issue.

In our support section, we explore a recent story which shows Mattel's new gender-free dolls do not harm kids despite what ther detractors think. Several professionals weigh in on the subject.

All this and much more in this week's "Weekly Wrap."

NEWS

A Texas public high school teacher says he is being fired for telling students he's gay. Josh Hamilton, 32, works at Grapevine High School and was put on administrative leave for reasons that are still unclear, but he thinks it is because he came out to a group of students.

COMMENTARY

"Black Christians give away forgiveness like it’s confetti, and white Trump evangelicals give it away sparingly, if at all. As an African American, the act of forgiveness appears to be our immediate go-to place in the face of unimaginable racial honor done to us." Read more of this commentary HERE

CAUSES

This week we continue our coverage of LGBT History month with profiles on Emma GonzálezSherenté Mishitashin HarrisRock HudsonRobert Indiana, and James Ivory.

ENTERTAINMENT

Our theater critic reviews "Ring Round the Moon" : The moon is blamed for all sorts of bizarre human behavior. It is also said that a ring around the moon portends change, and you’ll see plenty of that in Christopher Fry’s 1950 “Ring Round the Moon,” a wild adaptation of Jean Anouilh’s 1947 “Invitation to the Castle.”

SOCIAL

MASSIVE is back at Rich's for a special Halloween edition, presented by SDPIX, on Saturday, Oct. 26 starting at 9 pm.  Halloween weekend revelers are invited to head to Rich's for Hillcrest's spookiest party.

Research by Shaun Pichler (left), chair and professor of management at Cal State Fullerton, has shown that companies with LGBT-supportive policies tend to outperform their competitors over time, and if those policies are rescinded, firm value, productivity, and profitability declines.

One of the biggest weekends of the year is finally upon us and this week's Out & About has all your plans in detail.  Although Halloween doesn't officially happen until next Thursday, this week and weekend is packed full of spooktacular entertainment celebrating the season. From costume contests to pool parties to early morning dance celebrations, Hillcrest is coming alive all through the witching hour.

The time has come for Hillcrest's biggest haunted Halloween dance party and costume competition. And this year it's like getting a $2,500 shopping spree. Here are some of the local businesses that are contributing prizes

HEALTH, WELLNESS & SPORTS

Late last month Mattel successfully merged into the 21st century with a new genderless Creatable World doll line, some have praised the toys for their ability to allow children to decide the sex of their dolls if any, but some have said that's not a good thing. They are wrong according to child development professionals.
