SDGLN Weekly Wrap: February 29 - March 6, 2020

Here's everything we covered in SDGLN.com.

The primaries dominated the news this week and as you can imagine there was a lot to talk about. We had many commentaries and Letters to the Editor we ran here at SDGLN.

In other news, the Drag Queen Storytime is back with Barbie Q and Raquel Ita who hosted the controversial one in Chula Vista last year. This time they are taking their act to Encinitas.

Then, don't forget it's "spring forward" this weekend and the calendar is still full of fun stuff to do in this week's Out & About.

COMMENTARY

Our publisher Johnathan Hale wrote his own open letter to discuss politics and how it relates to his family, especially his bipartisan marriage.

Illustrator Joe Phillips spoke up about his thoughts on voting: "They say down south don’t speak of religion sex or politics. I moved to California so I could, The thing is politics affects every part of our lives if we like it or not. I am a part of several marginalized groups that have traditionally had to shut up and take it, to tow the line and wait my turn." You can read his full commentary HERE

San Diego Pride encouraged everyone to vote on primary election day, saying, the results, "will have huge impacts on the general election and our community for years to come."

San Diego Gay and Lesbian News invited community members Andrew DeBaker & Omar De Lugo to share their concerns with us in an open letter. They had taken to social media asking the community to boycott Hale publishing and its events.

A reader wrote in to us, explaining that the San Diego LGBT Community Center sent him a letter about his mail-in ballot which ultimately he never received.

CAUSES

Back in August of 2019 drag artists Barbie Q and Raquel Ita made headlines. They were going to be doing a highly controversial Drag Queen Storytime at the Civic Center Library Chula Vista. The performance went on amid protest, but in the end, it was a great success. Now Barbie Q and Raquel Ita are back, this time at the Lux Art Institute in Encinitas for Family Art Day.

ENTERTAINMENT

The White Party in Palm Springs is getting a little extra bass this year, as it has been announced that Grammy-award winning sensation Meghan Trainor will lend her voice at the Sunday T-Dance.

No one is more surprised than Sam Hatmaker (above left, with building partner Jessica Ragzy Ewud) that he’s on a competitive LEGO building reality show. The gender non-conforming gay contestant on Fox’s LEGO Masters is shocked that the show even exists, much less that he was selected to compete.
