Back Out With Benny

Back Out With Benny: Writing from the heart

I’ve been writing columns for local LGBT publications for more than a decade and sometimes it’s just really hard to think of topics to write about.

Sometimes, I’m fired up or excited about something and my fingers work magic and whip something out in minutes. Other times I sit for hours trying to think of something that will resonate with readers and get people talking.

Back Out With Benny: It's ok to age

Age is a funny thing. Many people make such a big deal about growing older, when really it’s something that should be celebrated. By the time next month’s column is printed, I will have aged another year, turning 36 and hitting the second half of my 30s.

Back Out With Benny: The month of love

Let’s try a bit harder to love each other this year, and decide that our friendships and community relationships are a lot more important than being “right” on social media.

Back Out With Benny: To be 'young and gay'

I remember every time I met a new, attractive guy my age, there were instant butterflies in my stomach as we went on dates and explored this “new” gay world together. I remember going to movies with dates and the nerves filled my body as I decided whether or not to hold their hand and our hands kept “bumping” into each other.

Back Out With Benny: Mixing the holidays with community

Sometimes the number of events taking place within our community gets tiring — even for the most seasoned of socialites — but I remind myself how fortunate I am to live in a place and be part of a community (since I was 16 years old, nearly 20 years now) that offers me such a wide variety of options to mix, connect, meet new people, and to raise funds and support for great causes.

Back Out With Benny: We are family

We are a family and despite our many differences (many of those differences are what make this family so beautiful), we are there for each other on our best days and our worst days.

Back Out With Benny: #TalkingSex

As a gay man, I’ve spent much of my life hearing people tell me how I should have sex (or why the sex I had is wrong, or why having too much sex made me a “slut”). I don’t want that to be the case anymore — I want people to feel the freedom to have whatever type of legal and consensual sex they want to have — as often as they want to!

Back out With Benny: A very wet but very memorable Pride

Even though Pride is now behind us, there is still so much going on around the community, with some of my favorite summer events on the horizon, including what many in the community refer to as “Pride Lite” — Hillcrest CityFest on Sunday, Aug. 9 from noon to 11 p.m.

Back Out With Benny: Sunday Fundays and more

Around Hillcrest, my favorite day of the week is Sunday (known by many as “Sunday Funday”). In the afternoon, a lot of people are out and about enjoying the many restaurants and bars in the area without the expectations of a Friday or Saturday night out.
