U.S. President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron each have made clear to Russian President Vladimir Putin this week that they are concerned about the abuse of LGBT rights in the vast nation stretching from eastern Europe to Asia.
Attorney General Eric Holder notified congressional leaders about the decision. He said Title 38, written before marriage-equality rulings by the courts, is in conflict with the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in June that struck down Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).
Obama: "If Russia wants to uphold the Olympic spirit, then every judgment should be made on the track or in the swimming pool or the balance beam and people’s sexual orientation shouldn’t have anything to do with it.”
