27th Annual AIDS Walk/Run San Diego set for Sept. 24

The San Diego LGBT Community Center has announced that the 27th annual AIDS Walk/Run San Diego will take place on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2016. The Center produces AIDS Walk/Run, the largest HIV/AIDS fundraiser in San Diego County.

Back Out With Benny: Living our own lives

The tired arguments like “PrEP is just a license to be promiscuous” resurfaced and it seemed that everyone who was chiming in suddenly were experts on virus transmission, prescription drugs, and medicine in general. People shared all sorts of information, much of it incorrect, and using that information to tell others how to live their lives.

The Center to offer expanded HIV testing hours

Testing will be conducted by staff of The Center who are trained HIV-testing counselors and part of the organization's #BeTheGeneration [to end HIV] team.

Dining Out For Life 2016 set for April 28

Dining Out For Life® is designed to fill some of San Diego’s best restaurants and bars – which have generously agreed to donate 25-100 percent of their food and liquor sales on that day – all in support of HIV/AIDS services and prevention programs at The Center.

Back Out With Benny: Mixing the holidays with community

Sometimes the number of events taking place within our community gets tiring — even for the most seasoned of socialites — but I remind myself how fortunate I am to live in a place and be part of a community (since I was 16 years old, nearly 20 years now) that offers me such a wide variety of options to mix, connect, meet new people, and to raise funds and support for great causes.

Back Out With Benny: #TalkingSex

As a gay man, I’ve spent much of my life hearing people tell me how I should have sex (or why the sex I had is wrong, or why having too much sex made me a “slut”). I don’t want that to be the case anymore — I want people to feel the freedom to have whatever type of legal and consensual sex they want to have — as often as they want to!

#100Days: Rick Cervantes shares his experience taking PrEP

Just a few of the things I’ve learned include the importance of taking care of myself, how to have sex without shame, and the deep-rooted fears and stigma that so many of us have surrounding gay sex — and sex in general.

Back Out With Benny: Sunday Fundays and more

Around Hillcrest, my favorite day of the week is Sunday (known by many as “Sunday Funday”). In the afternoon, a lot of people are out and about enjoying the many restaurants and bars in the area without the expectations of a Friday or Saturday night out.
