Theater Review: “Jersey Boys”

“Jersey Boys” plays through May 14, 2017: Thursday at 7:30 pm; Friday at 8 pm; Saturday at 2 and 8 pm; Sunday at 1 and 6 pm

“A good musical can make you thank God for the day you were born.”

Rick Elice said that, and he’s partly responsible for one of those musicals. He’s  the co-writer of the book for the multiple Tony-winning “Jersey Boys” that has just returned home for a short run through Sunday at San Diego Civic Theatre.

Theater Review: “Finding Neverland”

The story behind the story of "Peter Pan" comes to life in "Finding Neverland" at San Diego's Civic Theatre.

Peter Pan finally gets to fly in the last scene of “Finding Neverland,” but the rest of the show seems distressingly earthbound.

Not be missed, 'Matilda the Musical' is brilliant!

"Matilda: the Musical" plays through Sunday, February 5, at the Civic Theatre.

It’s always great when a musical you hadn't expected to move you does so on many levels.

“Matilda the Musical” now playing for a short run at the Civic Theatre in San Diego did that for me, and it will do it for you as well.

Theater Review: "Hedwig and the Angry Inch"

Euan Morton as Hedwig

If you're not familiar with the musical exposé that is "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" now playing at San Diego's Civic Theatre, you may wonder what it is exactly you're about to settle into and watch for 90 minutes.

I'll try to explain, keeping in mind the show doesn't have an intermission.

Theater Review: "The Sound of Music"

Director Jack O’Brien plays down the drama in the latest touring production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s beloved last musical.

The hills aren’t as alive as they used to be in Broadway San Diego’s touring version of “The Sound Of Music,” playing through Nov. 20 at Civic Theatre.

Director Jack O’Brien plays down the drama in the latest touring production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s beloved last musical.

Review: 'Newsies' steps up the spectacular

Joey Barreiro and the cast of "Newsies."

There are only a few Broadway musicals that feel like a rollercoaster ride through a discotheque, and Disney’s “Newsies” may be the “E” ticket in your coupon book.

Don’t worry if you don’t get that reference, just know that when you go see this show (and I suggest you do) that it is a powerhouse of adrenaline which serves as the ink to the prescription bottle storyline.

THEATER REVIEW: “Shrek” soars at Civic Theatre

This show has it all: charming and affecting characters, fabulous costumes, a whiz-bang production design and clever puppetry. Add David Lindsay-Abaire’s book appealing to the kid in all of us and Jeanine Tesori’s bouncy music, and you’ve got a show for everybody.
