Hillcrest Town Council update: May 20, 2016

The forum on homelessness sponsored by the Hillcrest Town Council (HTC) at its May 10 community meeting drew a crowd of over 100 concerned community members.

Hillcrest Town Council seats new board

The newly seated Hillcrest Town Council board members are Benny Cartwright, vice chair; Kath Rogers, chair; Rich Grousset, member-at-large; Mary McKenzie, secretary; David Coben, treasurer.

The new board of the Hillcrest Town Council (HTC), led by chair Kath Rogers, presided over its first meeting on Tuesday, April 12. While Rogers and the board members are slowly making some tweaks to the meeting format and structure, this meeting was fairly similar to those of past months and, as usual, was packed with great information and discussion.

Residents generally happy with bus, trolley service

The Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) Board recently voted unanimously to approve $108 million for the fiscal year 2017 Capital Improvement Program (CIP), welcome news to several Uptown residents who depend on the regional bus and trolley system.

The local residents largely echo a random sampling by the MTS that showed San Diegans are generally pleased with the agency’s work.

North Park Community Plan update nears finish line

The update will replace the 1986 Greater North Park Community Plan, which was preceded by the 1970 Park North-East Community Plan and the 1969 North Park Commercial Area Plan.

Homeless Outreach Team: a year in review

The Hillcrest program has engaged with 836 people and provided them some level of services, from relocating individuals to shelters to providing showers, job training and mental-health services. Out of the 836 contacted, 16 people were placed in homeless shelters.

Community health centers join efforts

Twelve community clinics have formed Integrated Health Partners (IHP), a consortium to advance the standards and reduce the costs of care at primary health centers. They represent more than 70 practice sites, including one in Bankers Hill just north of Downtown.

Uptown Planners enter into 'twilight zone'

The changes would encourage higher density along major transportation corridors in Uptown, which city planners have designated as Park Boulevard, Washington Street, University Avenue, and Fourth, Fifth and Sixth streets.

Five donation meters coming to Hillcrest

The Hillcrest Business Association (HBA) voted Tuesday night to sign an agreement with IPS Group in Pennsylvania to provide the donation meters, which look exactly like parking meters except they are painted red.

Hillcrest Town Council opposes televangelist’s project

After a lively discussion about the proposed Morris Cerullo International Legacy Center in Mission Valley, the Hillcrest Town Council on Tuesday night voted 25-1, with two residents abstaining, to author a letter of opposition to the massive multi-use project.
