Toast to Hillcrest celebrates one of America's great neighorhoods

SAN DIEGO – The fun never seems to end in Hillcrest, even after the neighborhood’s signature events, CityFest and San Diego Pride, have passed. Next up is the fourth annual Toast to Hillcrest.

The community celebration will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, in the gayborhood.

The event is a fundraiser for the Hillcrest History Guild (HHG), an organization that captures the rich and colorful history of the neighborhood known as the cultural core of San Diego’s GLBT community.

How to get tickets for "Toast to Hillcrest" on Thursday

SAN DIEGO -- The Hillcrest History Guild (HHG) will be celebrating the fourth annual “Toast to Hillcrest” on Thursday, Aug. 12, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

This event is for those 21 and older only as dozens of local cocktail lounges, restaurants, wine bars and pubs offer up “toasts” (as well as tastes) to participants as they stroll throughout the neighborhood. In addition, the fun-raiser provides a red, double-decker bus to move participants throughout Hillcrest.

BREAKING NEWS: Montclair Park playground in North Park reopens today with ceremony

SAN DIEGO -- The grand reopening of Montclair Park in North Park will be celebrated from noon to 1 p.m. today.

The neighborhood park of about nine acres, located south of Quince Street and next to Interstate 805.

City Councilmember Todd Gloria; Stacey LoMedico, director of the city's Park and Recreation Department; Patti Boekamp, director of the city's Engineering and Capital Projects Department; and North Park community members will participate in the official ceremony this afternoon.

SAN DIEGO -- The streets of Hillcrest came to life Sunday as nearly 100,000 people gathered for the 26th annual CityFest street fair.

The mood in the neighborhood was particularly spirited as participants not only celebrated everything “fabulous” about Hillcrest, but also Wednesday’s historic court ruling that overturned Proposition 8.

The Center gets grant to improve communication tools

SAN DIEGO -- The Center has received a $20,000 Neighborhood Reinvestment Program grant to help finance a new website and enhanced e-communication tools.

County Supervisor Ron Roberts' office announced the grant today.

“We are grateful to Supervisor Roberts for his support of The Center,” said Jeffrey M. Wergeles, development director at The Center.

“Rally for Medicare For All" set for noon Saturday at Spanish Landing

SAN DIEGO – A Meetup group of concerned citizens will “Rally for Medicare For All” at noon Saturday, Aug. 7, at Spanish Landing on North Harbor Drive.

Health-care advocates, doctors, nurses and patients will gather there to support the cause and to counter a protest of “Obamacare” by Tea Party faithful.

VIDEOS: Get ready to party Sunday at CityFest in Hillcrest

SAN DIEGO – Thousands of people will gather in Hillcrest this Sunday for the 26th annual CityFest celebration.

The event, which celebrates the 1984 relighting of the iconic neon Hillcrest sign hanging at Fifth and University avenues, has become one of the largest community street fairs in the county, drawing crowds of up to 150,000 people.

CityFest will begin at noon and officially last until 8 p.m., although many revelers often continue the party throughout the evening, with a number of neighborhood bars and other venues hosting official after-parties.

SAN DIEGO – Hundreds of gay rights supporters, joyously celebrating the Prop. 8 decision overturning the ban on same-sex marriage, crammed into the auditorium at The Center on Wednesday night for a Town Hall meeting.

Hundreds more milled around outside, hoping for a chance to get inside. Some chanted slogans, such as “What do we want? Equal rights! When do we want it? Now!”

Inside the mood was just as festive – and hot and stuffy from the crowded hall.

Several thousand march for joy in San Diego after Prop. 8 decision

SAN DIEGO – Several thousand people – families holding hands with their children, couples hugging, folks walking with their dogs, and many chanting slogans extolling equal rights -- flocked to Hillcrest late Wednesday afternoon to celebrate the historic legal ruling that struck down California’s Proposition 8 law banning same-sex marriage.

Many gathered at Sixth and University in the gayborhood for a 6 p.m. march down University to The Center, where a Town Hall meeting was scheduled at 7 p.m. San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders was among the dignitaries in attendance.

VIDEO: Gay groups protest at Manchester Grand Hyatt

SAN DIEGO -- About 20 activists picketed in front of the Manchester Grand Hyatt on Saturday, the site of a long-standing GLBT and labor community boycott.

Organized by the “Sleep With The Right People” coalition of UniteHERE and the San Diego Alliance for Marriage Equality (SAME), protestors gathered in response to what was said to be the first GLBT group to violate the boycott.
