Treatments For Nail Fungal Infection – Various Types Of Treatments!
Fungal nail infection is called onychomycosis. It’s not a good thing to have one and not trying to get rid of it for a long time is not pretty at all. Sometimes you can get rid of the infection just from your home.
Non-Prescription Treatment Methods – How Can I Get Rid Of Fungal Nail Infection Permanently?
You can try home remedies that don’t need a doctor’s advice, it works well also.
Over-the-counter treatments:
You can try the lotions and cream from your next-door medical shop. These antifungal medicines work for a while and help you get rid of the infection; but not for a long time though. The thing is they are not costly but not that strong enough to give you permanent relief; if that happens you have to look for other options.
Mentholated salve:
Many studies suggest that Mentholated salve like Vicks VapoRub can give you a long time, even lifelong satisfaction. Swab a little amount of the cream on your nails every day to get the results.
Snakeroot extract:
This extract is a natural anti-fungal mix from the sunflower plant family. It works well for some people and gives benefits as the normal prescription creams.
Tea tree oil:
You can apply this on your nails twice a day to get the results. Remember that it’s a natural antiseptic, so it doesn’t have any side effects. Don’t take it by mouth, Because of its toxic nature. Nevertheless, it’s not very clear about the effectiveness of this treatment method.
Listerine or vinegar:
Soak your affected nails in vinegar or Listerine for over 5 minutes a day to dry out your nails.
Prescription Medicines
If nothing works well in your home, you may take it to the experts like a dermatologist, who is a nail or skin specialist, or a podiatrist, who is a foot doctor. They gently examine your nails and get rid of the fungus or send it to la for diagnosis. They can also prescribe you stronger medicines.
Topical medicines:
If your infection is not severe, the doctor will recommend you an antifungal skin cream or lotion to rub into the surface of the nails or a nail lacquer to paint on the surface walls of the nail. First, you should trim your nail and soak the affected area, this can let the drug go deep inside the fungus and attack it. It can also reduce pain by minimizing the pressure on nails.
Medicines you take by mouth:
If your infection is a severe one the doctor will provide you with antifungal pills, mainly terbinafine or itraconazole which works very well for the growth of healthy and new nails in the area. These are not prescribed to people with liver diseases, and there is a chance that these medicines will interact with other medications that you take like antidepressants.
Other Treatments
Laser treatment:
New types of treatment like laser treatments will destroy the fungus by emitting high-intensity lights. So far the results of this treatment are fair, but more studies are needed to prove that this method is safe and effective. These are expensive and are not covered by any kind of insurance either.
Nail removal:
If anything doesn’t work, you’re in for a painful ride which is nail removal. Removing the affected nail will help you to grow new nails in that place, but it would take a year or so. The process would be through surgery or the doctor will put a strong chemical in that area to remove the nail. Both of these treatments can be done at the clinic or the doctor’s office. You don’t need to be admitted to the hospital.
Once you get healthy nails try to avoid getting nail infections again. Bleach your bathroom tile to make it disinfected, wear socks with shoes, and don’t go outside without any protection on your feet.
