SDGLN Weekly Wrap: August 24 - August 30, 2019

This week Chula Vista was in the headlines as protesters and supporters clashed about a local event called "Drag Queen Story Hour." Some residents and religious leaders feel the literacy program, where drag queens read to kids, should not be held in their Otay Ranch library branch while others, including openly gay and former mayor Steve Padilla, think banning the event is discrimination.

Fan "clacking" prohibited at CRSSD event this year

Fans attending the CRSSD Festival in San Diego next month are going to have to show their spirit without the use of Japanese fans, the festival has social media buzzing with their new set of rules which discourages "fan slapping," or the act of taking out a hand-held fan and snapping it open to produce a sharp cracking sound.

This week saw the prevention of two possible crimes. One in Palm Springs when a man walked into a barbershop with a knife. He was later shot by police. The other on a much grander scale in which the FBI arrested a potential domestic terrorist who according to them, had the makings of bombs in his home.

This week there is plenty to do as summer begins to simmer. First, get yourself to the Porto Vista Hotel on Thursday and Friday for some harbor-view socializing, then catch Kenny Ard under the stars at insideOUT for some classic cabaret. 

Then ahead of the fundraiser on September 24, you are going to need a Red Dress. Get to Urban Mo's on Friday for dresses as low as $25.
