The NFL season is underway and already it looks too close to call a Super Bowl winner, with the Chiefs, Dolphins, Eagles, Cowboys, Bills, and 49ers all looking up for the fight. The Kansas City Chiefs are aiming to go all the way and claim back-to-back titles after defeating the Eagles 38-35 in a tense finale at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona in February 2023.

Kansas City Chiefs

According to the very latest NFL odds, the Chiefs are the favorites to lift the Vince Lombardi trophy for the third time in the last five years, and with Patrick Mahomes pulling the strings, it’s hard to make a case against them.

Last season the Chiefs were the most entertaining team in the NFL, scoring more points than any other team. But there’s more than just point scoring to consider when it comes to deciding who is the most entertaining team around.

Most points scored by NFL team in 2022

Kansas City Chiefs: 17 games 496 points total 29.2 points per game

Philadelphia Eagles: 17 477 28.1

Dallas Cowboys: 17 467 27.5

Buffalo Bills: 16 455 28.4

Detroit Lions: 17 453 26.6

Part of the Chiefs appeal is Mahomes, still only 28 years of age and already a two-time Super Bowl winner. When he has the ball in his hands, anything can happen. He has brought new ideas and creativity to the QB position that many never thought possible and he is the main reason that Kansas is considered favorites to repeat last season’s triumph.

Mahomes has an incredible arm with a range of passing styles, plus superb athletic ability. Combine that with his on-field smarts and you have one of the most exciting players to have ever played the game. A guy who’s guaranteed to get you off your seat every time he has the football.

Miami Dolphins

After the first seven games of the season, the Dolphins have become the new entertainers, scoring 240 points at an average of 34.3 points per game. That included a record-breaking 70-20 victory over the Denver Broncos.

Only the Bears in 1940 and Washington in 1966 have scored more points in a single game. It was also only the fourth 70-plus-point game in NFL history and the second-highest yards in a game in NFL history. The result saw them become the first team in NFL history with five passing TDs and five rushing TDs in a game, but how do the Dolphins and the Chiefs compare to years gone by.

The most entertaining teams in NFL history

2007 New England Patriots

They may have lost the Super Bowl final with a 17-14 upset against the New York Giants, but the Patriots of 2007 season became only the eighth team in NFL history to finish a regular season undefeated.

Their 16-0 record meant that Bill Belichick’s Patriots were also the first team with a perfect regular season since the NFL expanded its schedule to sixteen games in 1978. Quarterback Tom Brady won his first NFL MVP award and threw a then-record 50 passing touchdowns, while wide receiver Randy Moss caught an NFL-record 23 receiving touchdowns.

1989 San Francisco 49ers

Any team that has Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, and Ronnie Lott in it is going to be a contender for the most entertaining side ever, and this 49ers team did not disappoint. They recorded a 14-2 record in the regular season, before outscoring their play-off opponents 126–26, including a 55-10 Super Bowl victory over the Denver Broncos. Their second consecutive Super Bowl triumph, and one that rightly saw them hailed as one of the best NFL teams ever.

Most points by NFL team in a season

2013 Denver Broncos: 16 games 606 total points 37.9 points per game

2007 New England Patriots: 16 589 36.8

2018 Kansas City Chiefs: 16 565 35.3

2011 Green Bay Packers: 16 560 35.0

2012 New England Patriots: 16 557 34.8

1999 St. Louis Rams

A year after a 4-12 losing season, the St. Louis Rams lost their quarterback and had to turn to journeyman Kurt Warner. He went on to throw for over 4,000 yards and 41 touchdowns, helping the team finish with a 13-3 record and become one of only five teams in NFL history to score more than 30 points on twelve separate occasions during a single season. The Rams went on to seal a memorable last-minute Super Bowl win over the Tennessee Titans to claim their first-ever title.

1985 Chicago Bears

The greatest NFL team ever? That’s what many people consider the 1985 Chicago Bears to be. After finishing the season with a 15-1 record, Coach Mike Ditka saw his side outscore their opponents 91-10 on their way to defeating the New England Patriots 46-10 in the Super Bowl. Their 36-point victory was the then, largest winning margin in Super Bowl history. The Bears Chicago has an 18-1 overall record, with only five teams scoring more than 10 points against them in a game.
