Nashville, TN – The weeks-long search for missing University of Missouri student Riley Strain has come to a heartbreaking conclusion. On Friday morning, a grim discovery was made in the Cumberland River, approximately eight miles from downtown Nashville. A work crew spotted a body in the water shortly before 7:30 a.m. near 61st Avenue North in the Nations neighborhood.

Authorities Identify the Body 

Metro Nashville Police Chief John Drake confirmed during a news conference that the body recovered was indeed that of 22-year-old Riley Strain. The student was still wearing the same shirt and watch he had on when he went missing, aiding in the identification process.

Preliminary findings from the investigation suggest that foul play is not suspected in Strain’s death. Chief Drake stated, “Our investigators did not observe any foul-play-related trauma.” He added that there is “no other evidence that suggests anything other than” Strain falling into the river accidentally.

At 7:30 p.m., candles were lit, and prayers were offered for Strain’s family. Spencer Maige, a friend of Strain’s, led the vigil in an opening prayer, saying, “God, we don’t understand this fully, but we do know you allow love to shine through in the darkest times.”

Others in attendance took the opportunity to express their gratitude for the community’s support during the search efforts. Chris Dingman, a personal friend of the Strain family, conveyed the family’s appreciation, stating, “I can’t emphasize how much the family appreciated this.”

A Family’s Heartfelt Thanks

Later that evening, Strain’s family gathered at the Metro Nashville Police Headquarters to thank the community for their unwavering support during this trying time. Ryan Gilbert, Strain’s father, expressed his gratitude, saying, “You’ve helped us, let us take our boy home.”

Strain’s stepfather, Chris Whiteid, echoed the sentiment, stating, “We’re ready for this to be over with. To the people of Nashville, I can’t thank you enough for the support, the love, the encouragement that you’ve shown…in some of our darkest hours. The hugs, the prayers, the offers. I can’t say it enough. Thank you.”

Michelle Whiteid, Strain’s mother, had a simple yet poignant message for all parents: “I just ask that you mommas out there hug your babies tight tonight, please. Please for me. Hug your babies tight tonight.”

Bill Powers, Strain’s former principal at Kickapoo High School and Cherokee Middle School in Springfield, Missouri, remembered him as a pleasant and well-liked student. “Just an infectious smile and personality. Fun-loving kid,” Powers said. “Always very positive and respectful. He was smart, and took upper-level courses.”

Powers, a Tennessee native familiar with Nashville’s downtown area, expressed his heartbreak over the recent developments, saying, “It’s devastating. We’re heartbroken. As a parent and a father, my heart goes out to the parents of the family.”

Delta Chi Fraternity, of which Strain was a member, also released a statement expressing their sorrow, saying, “Our hearts go out to Riley’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time as we work to provide support and resources to all those affected by this tragedy.”
