The movie was based on the 1926 Winnie-the-Pooh book. However, the book was based on ‌a bear’s journey in search of honey. But in this adaption, Rhys Frake-Waterfield brings a horror theme to the child-friendly story.

The History Of The Movie

The comic character Winnie and Pooh was established in the book Winnie-the-Pooh by English author A.A. Milne and English illustrator E.H. Shepard. Its sequel was followed by The House at Pooh’s Corner (1928).

In 1961, Walt Disney licensed certain film rights to the series of Milne’s stories and developed the story into a film, short films, television series, animated series, and many more. It is believed that Winnie-the-Pooh is the third best-selling franchise in the world after Disney’s Princess and Star Wars.

However, when the character Winnie-the-Pooh fell into the public domain earlier this year, which means anybody can create a plot around the character or reimagine it as they fit. While many fantasize about the childhood character going to collect honey to prepare for the winter, filmmaker Rhys Frake-Waterfield saw it as a horror tale.

Release Date

Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey (2023) was originally scheduled to release in October 2022, but due to increased publicity for the movie it was moved to a later date. The film was released on January 26, 2023, in Mexico and is expected to release in a one-day event across the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada on February 15, 2023. The world premiere starts on February 15, 2023.

Fan’s Reaction 

The killing spree of the then Honey-searching bear has been attracting negative reviews across social media. In the wake of the trailer, many people have labeled it “Disgusting” as the fans blame social media, society, and undoubtedly Disney for selling the rights to one of the lovable characters.

It is assumed that fans who have poured negative comments were the ones who expected Winnie-the-Poo as the same old character. On the other viewers who love some twists and tales to the old cartoon character have praised the work of Waterfield, who directed and produced the horror version of Winnie and the Pooh.

The Cast Of The Movie

The horror tale of Winnie-the-Pooh is written, co-produced, and directed by Rhys Frake-Waterfield. In the starring roles, Craig David Dowsett plays the role of Winnie-the-Pooh and Chris Cordell as Piglet. The human friend of the animals, Nikolai Leon plays Christopher Robin.

When its trailer was released Waterfield said “No one is going to mistake this (for Disney). He added that “When you see the cover for this and you see the trailers and the stills and all that, there’s no way anyone is going to think this is a child’s version of it”.

It is true that from the glimpse of the poster it exhibits a darker version of Winnie-the-Pooh.

Production And Filming

Initially, the film was shot over a period of ten days in the Ashdown Forest of East Sussex, England, which is exactly the place where its story began.

The collaboration between Jagged Edge Productions and ITN studios progressed the production of the film. The budget was increased for the production of the movie after it gained publicity, which lead to several days of reshoots.    

Plot 

The old Winnie-the-poo tale is developed into a horror version when Pooh and Piglet become delusional and is forced to rely on their wild instincts when Christopher Robin has pulled away from them when he decides to attend ‌college.

In his childhood, ‌Christopher became friends with Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore, Rabbit, and Owl. In the absence of Christopher, the creatures were pushed to extreme starvation and forced to kill ‌Eyeore. They grew hatred towards humanity and returned to their feral instincts.

The adult Christopher returns to the Hundred Acre Wood, along with his fiancee Mary, to reunite with his old friends, only to encounter some unexpected events.

Meanwhile, a group of students from a university decided to rent a cabin in the Hundred Acre Wood and encountered the delusional Pooh and Piglet, who slashed off all the students and reminded Christopher of the fact that he was the reason for their violent behavior.

Conclusion

The horror tale is all set to premiere on the big screen ‌this 15 February 2023. As many fans felt traumatized by the trailer, there remain some fans who are eager to watch the horror version of ‌Pooh.

It is assumed that the film contains some high-rated violent scenes. So viewers should be cautious before attempting to watch the film.

Even the director themselves has revealed that once the movie is watched no one will see it as a child version of the movie. This indicates that the actions of the delusional Pooh and Piglet cannot be compromised or eased even by their lovable friend Christopher Robin.

As the movie ‌premiered in Mexico, it attracted mixed emotions of comments. Therefore, this movie may not be to everyone’s taste.
