Dame Helen Mirren, born Helen Lydia Mironoff, is an English actor born in London, England, on 26 July 1945.

Being an accolade of a myriad of awards throughout her acting career, she achieved the Academy Award for Best Actress in the year 2007 for her performance as Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen. 

Early Life And Career

Mirren was born to an English mother and a Russian father and was into acting since her childhood.

She successfully auditioned for the National Youth Theatre (NYT) at the age of eighteen and by her twenties, she got the chance to play Cleopatra in the NYT show Antony, and Cleopatra played at the Old Vic.

According to her, she believes that this was the role that helped her launch a career in the film industry and helped her sign with agent Al Parker. 

While working with NYT, The Queen actress was welcomed by the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) and acted in a set of plays including The Revenger’s Tragedy, All’s Well That Ends Well, Troilus and Cressida (1968), The Two Gentlemen of Verona (1970), etc.

And in 1970, John Goldschmidt, director, and producer, produced a documentary film, Doing Her Own Thing, which portrayed Mirren’s life in the Royal Shakespeare Company. 

In the late 60s, Mirren made her debut in film through a 1967 drama film, Herostratus directed and produced by Don Levy. It was her first credited film role and from here on she became a prominent face of English films.

By the 2000s, Mirren became a successful actress. And within her acting career, she has performed as three British queens including Elizabeth I in the 2005 television series Elizabeth I, Elizabeth II in the 2006 British biographical drama film, The Queen, and Charlotte in the 1994 British biographical historical comedy-drama film, The Madness of King George.

Also, she is the only actress who got to illustrate both Queen Elizabeths on screen. Furthermore, she was honored with a myriad of accolades for her performance in The Queen, including a BAFTA, a Golden Globe, and an Academy Award.

Moreover, Mirren is one of the few actresses who was accoladed with the Triple Crown of Acting, which is actually awarded to those actors who achieved a competitive Academy Award, Emmy Award, and Tony Award for their acting skills.

This greatest honor by the American Entertainment Industry is considered the most elevated distinction admitted in American film, television, and theater. 

As an honor to her career in drama and theatre, she was endowed as a Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (DBE) in the Queen’s 2003 Birthday Honours. And in January 2013, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

In the early 80s, Mirren dated Northern Irish actor Liam Neeson and lived with him. But it didn’t last long and by 1986, she started dating American director Taylor Hackford whom she met on the sets of the 1985 film White Nights.

The duo got married on 31 December 1997 at the Ardersier Parish Church. While it was her first marriage, for Taylor, it was his third. He had two children from his previous marriages while she had none. 

The Eye in the Sky actress was included on The Times’ list of the top 10 British actresses of all time in January 2009.
